Back 2 School.. For Me Too!

I've decided to make a big leap. I'm going back to school. Grad school. I want a masters in PolySci.

This is a big moment for me. I'm not really sure how friends and family will react to this. Laughter? Maybe a thumbs up.. or a pat on the back? I've never been one for school and am probably one of the least likely candidates for grad school considering more than once I have screamed, "No way will I ever go back to school!"

I did tell my mom. Her reaction was to be expected. She paused and then asked why I wasn't getting my doctorate in law. Interesting reaction considering I have never mentioned anything about law. I find it funny that somehow the assumption was Dr. Steve, attorney at law!

I am happy to be going to school on Tuesday. This is the first big decision I have ever made solely on my own. Now that I control my own finances and future, I alone get to make a decision for myself.

Reasons for Masters:

1. To be educated.
2. Give me some free time activities.
3. Only will take 2 years.
4. Good for career.

But the main reason is simple. It will be a great way to make friends. The Falls is welcoming no doubt. Friendly even. But it will be nice to have another group of people to see besides work buddies. Work is fantastic and I love my co workers, but I need a secondary source of people.

I am just happy to be doing something for me though. It's rewarding. I am not doing this for my parents or because I am supposed to. It's because I want to. I want this for me. And damnit, that feels good.

The Falls, Part One

It has been a month.

Well Six weeks, but who's counting.

Upon my arrival in 'The Falls" I was welcomed in by a furniture saleswoman by the name of the Sue. She was in her 60s and had no problem making me aware of this. I have seen her on two separate days now, and on both occasions she was wearing a cheery Hawaiian shirt with birds of paradise all over.

Sue craves Hawaii.

I tell you this because the residents of 'The Falls' fit into two separate categories.

The 'I Love The Falls!' category consists of life long residents.  People who were destined to live here their whole lives. They want everyone to know that Pecan Tree Farming is a very American way to get by. Most typically these individuals are found at one of the many WalMarts or Fast Food Establishments.

The 'I can't wait to get the hell out of The Falls' category is equally entertaining. You can run into them anywhere in 'The Falls" but more often than not they are found drunk at bars. For you see, these people often only feel comfortable sharing their feelings when everyone around them is either passed out or on their way to it.

The Falls thus far has been a learning experience of not just Texas, but of America. I have met more 'Americans' here in the last month than I have in my whole life.

So to sum up my first month here alone and without friends and family...I love it.

I will have more specific stories about what America is really like in future posts. This is just a broad general post to get things started.

Possible Blog Posts to Come:

1. Singing Texas specific sing-along songs in a party bus with over 50 drunk people for two hours.
2. Learning how to turn Watermelons into decorative table pieces.
3. A night on the town at a bar called "Fuglies"
4. Buying furniture from Sue.
5. Fink's phone call on the likely possibility of him getting a reporter position at my station.
6. Going to a rodeo and seeing a 9 year old get plowed by a 900 pound bull.

Now it is your turn to vote 1-6 on which post you would like to here next.

Thanks for reading about 'The Falls' and remember....YeeeHaw!!
